The News

Starbucks made the Tropical Butterfly Refresher a centerpiece of its summer 2026 lineup: passionfruit and guava, mango-pineapple popping pearls, and butterfly pea flower so the drink shifts color as you mix it. Early write-ups also call out the usual customization lane—lemonade, water, or coconut milk as the base—and green-tea extract bumped to roughly 50 or 100 mg of caffeine, or left out entirely. There’s a heavier coconut-milk version floating around the menu as the Tropical Butterfly Drink.

Summer at Starbucks is as much about the photo as the sip. When a drink ships with built-in color shift and popping pearls, you’re watching a chain bet that people will line up for something that reads “new” in the cup before they’ve tasted it.

The pearls do more work than the fruit on paper—they give you something to chew on between sips so the refresher doesn’t flatten into sweet juice. It’s the same reason boba took over strip malls: texture keeps you engaged long enough to finish a venti.

The caffeine toggles matter for households and car pools. One person can run the full green-tea extract, someone else can go caffeine-free, and nobody has to split an order across two shops. That’s less about “wellness” and more about not losing the sale because one kid can’t have caffeine.

If the coconut-milk build lands the way early reviews describe it, you’ve basically got two SKUs off one story: bright and icy, or creamy and vacation-coded. That’s a clean summer menu arc without inventing a second campaign.

Starbucks Unveils Tropical Butterfly Refresher and Tropical Butterfly Drink as Centerpieces of Summer 2026 Menu

New layered refresher pairs passionfruit and guava with mango-pineapple pearls; butterfly pea flower creates a color-forward experience in every cup

SEATTLE, May 11, 2026 — Starbucks (NASDAQ: SBUX) today announced the national debut of the Tropical Butterfly Refresher and Tropical Butterfly Drink, two limited-time offerings engineered for peak summer occasions. The launch anchors a broader summer menu rollout designed around vivid cold beverages, customizable caffeine, and texture-forward formats that continue to perform in company-operated and licensed stores.

The Tropical Butterfly Refresher starts with a tropical fruit base layered with notes of passionfruit and guava, finished with a butterfly pea flower infusion that shifts hue as guests swirl the beverage. Mango- and pineapple-flavored popping pearls add burst texture and a tangy counterpoint to the fruit-forward profile.

Guests may personalize the refresher with lemonade, water, or coconut milk as the base. Green tea extract is available at multiple levels—including a caffeine-free preparation—alongside options calibrated to approximately 50 mg and 100 mg of caffeine for guests who want a lighter lift than traditional brewed coffee.

The Tropical Butterfly Drink reimagines the platform on a coconut milk foundation for a creamier, dessert-adjacent serve that mirrors vacation flavors while remaining handheld and drive-thru friendly.

“Summer is when our cold platform has to work hardest—speed, color, and craveability all have to show up in the first sip,” said Denise Kwan, vice president, Cold Coffee & Refreshers, Starbucks. “Tropical Butterfly is our answer for guests who want something that feels celebratory and a little theatrical, without asking them to sacrifice the customization they expect from Starbucks.”

The Tropical Butterfly Refresher and Tropical Butterfly Drink are available starting today at participating Starbucks stores in the United States while supplies last. Menu availability may vary by market; guests can confirm local availability through the Starbucks app.
